Databases allow you to manage large amounts of information over the web. They are necessary to run many web-based applications, such as bulletin boards, content management systems, and online retail shops.

If you need to create a database and an account to access that database, we recommend that you use the PostgreSQL Database Wizard. You can also create a database, add users, and link a database to an existing user account with the PostgreSQL Databases interface.

Create a database

To create the database:

  1. In the Database Name field, type a name for the database.
  2. Click Create Database.
    • The new database will appear in the Current Databases table.

ALERT! Warning: Some versions of PostgreSQL are ANSI SQL-92 compliant and do not support recursive grants, wildcard grants, or future grants. To allow multiple Users to access your PostgreSQL Tables, click Synchronize Grants in the PostgreSQL Databases interface after you add a Table.

Create a database user

After you create the database, you will need to add users and their privileges to the database.

note Note: PostgreSQL user accounts must be created separately from mail and web administrator accounts.

To create a new user account:

  1. Under the PostgreSQL Users section of the interface, enter the username in the Username textbox.
  2. Enter a password in the Password textbox.
    • You can click Password Generator to create a secure password.
  3. Enter the password again in the Password (Again) textbox.
  4. Click Create User.

The Current Databases Table

This table contains a list of databases on your server. For each database, the table displays:

  • The name of the database.
  • The size of the database.
  • Users who may manipulate the database.
  • A link that allows you to delete the database.

Search databases

To search for a specific database in the Current Databases table:

  1. Type your criteria in the Search textbox.
  2. Click Go.

The table will display the search results.

Remove a user from a database

To remove a user from a database:

  1. In the Current Databases table, click the CircleXbutton1134.gif icon that is next to the user that you wish to delete.
  2. If you are sure that you wish to remove the user’s privileges to manage the database, click Yes.

Delete a database

  1. In the Current Databases table, locate the row corresponding to the database that you wish to delete.
  2. Click Delete Database.
  3. If you are sure that you wish to permanently delete the database, click Yes.

Define a user's privileges

Privileges define how the user is able to interact with the database. For example, they will determine whether or not the user can add and delete information.

To define a user’s privileges:

  1. Under the Add User to Database section of the interface, select a user from the User drop-down menu.
  2. From the Database drop-down menu, select the database to which you wish to allow the user access.
  3. Click Submit.

Delete a PostgreSQL user

To delete a PostgreSQL user account:

  1. Click the CircleXbutton1134.gif icon in the appropriate row of the Current Users table.
  2. If you are sure that you wish to permanently delete the account, click Yes.

To enter new information into a database, you can use the phpPgAdmin client installed with cPanel.
